What's the diff?.. THE MEDIA!

In the Vietnam War, American soldiers were treated like monsters! They were seen as the enemy. People blamed their “western ways” destroyed the life and culture of Vietnam. Instead of accepting the soldiers’ help, Vietnam seemed pleased to be under communist control. The Vietnamese did more than just rebel against the American troops. The Vietnamese purposely destroyed the United States embassy, stealing anything and everything, to show their dislike for the West. The media didn’t make things any better for the troops. Instead, they made the troops look evil, disgusting, drunk killers that attacked innocent villages.  

In the Iraq-Afghanistan War, our troops were heroes! It was an honor to meet a soldier and welcome them back home. These men and women are seen as heroes for the huge sacrifice they have given for their country. Private businesses are generous with perks for those in the military, and being in the military is seen as a noble position. The media overflows with American pride for those fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 So what was the difference between these to wars? THE MEDIA!

"Where Is The Love?" By: The Black Eyed Peas

This song was released the same year that US troops were sent to Iraq. In the year 2003, The Black Eyed Peas were singing a song about “Where is the Love”, that same time our troops were sent to find out what’s going on in the world. Now nothing has changed except that The Black Eyed Peas dress better than they did back then. Like back then, hate and violence is still around. This song relates to 9/11 and the War in Iraq. Also, it talks about the terrorists that are on our own soil, such as the KKK, Crips, Bloods and many more gangs that exist. This song talks about the current issues we had back then and now. A lot of songs about taking action and peace were released. This song gave attention to the current events that were causing issues in the place we call home. These lyrics are similar to those of songs from the Vietnam Era because they talk about current issues of the time and have a call to action to do something about the problems the problems the country faces.  

Truman Doctrine: part of the Containment Policy, the US gives money to countries to fight communism, part of the US' Post WWII foreign policy

Containment Policy: keep communism from spreading, contain communism, expel communism out of foreign countries, part of the US' Post WWII foreign policy

Bay of Pigs Invasion (similarities to Invasion of Panama): US wanted to overthrow government in Panama and put in democracy, Cuba was invaded by exiles from Cuba to try to overthrow the government and US wanted to establish democracy

US Foreign Policy with Regard to Korea and Vietnam: contain communism so other countries don't fall to it (Containment Policy), give money to countries threatened by communism (Truman Doctrine), US and other top countries head the decisions of the U.N.

Intervention: US tries to overthrow communist governments, fight the wars of other countries that deal with communism, press democracy on other countries, help to push communist forces back when the communists invade a free country, influence other countries to get what the US wants

Cold War Development: mostly between Russia and the US, communism vs. democracy, the space race, development of nuclear weapons, and the Cuban Missile Crisis fueled the Cold War, when the USSR starts to become as advance as the US, the US becomes scared and feel threatened, the USSR's possession of nuclear weapons scares the US, the Us wants to stop the spread of communism

War Powers Act: the President can only go to war with Congress' permission, in Vietnam and Korea, the US was involved in these conflicts for years without declaring war

WWII Foreign Policy vs. Post WWII Foreign Policy: In WWII, the main goal for the US was to win the war at all costs and defeat the Nazis. In Post WWII, the main goal was to contain communism as stated in the Containment Policy, including, giving aid to countries threatened by communism (Truman Doctrine).

Limited War: when a country is involved in a conflict, but doesn't use all of its resources. Limited War Ex: Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan Total War: WWII

Examples of Containment In Europe: the US gave money to countries threatened by Soviet rule (Truman Doctrine), the US wanted to prevent the USSR's communist ways from spreading to other countries in Europe, East Germany was communist and West Germany was free, East Berlin was communist, West Berlin was free, France, Great Britain, and the US tried to keep communism from spreading from East Berlin and East Germany to West Berlin and West Germany

Main Points of the Division of Germany: Communist East Germany and East Berlin were ruled by the Soviet Union, Democratic West Berlin and West Germany were ruled by France, Great Britain, and the US, fencing, soldiers, and later on, the Berlin Wall separated the two sides, Berlin was in the middle of communist East Germany, Braidenburg Gate was the main passage way from East Germany to West Germany, was built by the Soviet Union

Douglass MacArthur Dismissal: MacArthur pushed the North Koreans back further than the original border, where he was supposed to push them back to, he didn't listen to the President, he made public statements against the president

Korean War Similarities with Persian Gulf War: both countries were invaded by other countries, North Korea invaded South Korea and Iraq invaded Kuwait, the US fought the wars of other countries, original borders between the Koreas and between Iraq and Kuwait needed to be reestablished

Nuclear Ban Test: countries containing known nuclear weapons agreed to sign a treaty not to test nuclear weapons, but some countries, like the US, still test nuclear weapons

Long Term Effect of Vietnam: the war divided America over which side people were on, this still influences how war is viewed today (Democrats and Republicans and hawks vs. doves), the war got rid of the draft, death, cancer and other illnesses from Agent Orange, Vietnamese migration to the US, brought down the Nixon administration

Peace Corps: a way to help third world countries, help build wells, schools, was a way for people to get out of the draft to Vietnam

End of Cold War (the event that marked it): the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Domino Theory: one nation falls to communism the next country will fall as well, caused a fear of communism and made this fear caused the US to get involved in wars against communism, other countries near communist countries were more at risk

Nixon's Detente: eased tensions between the US and the USSR, peaceful coexistence, Nixon and Brezhnev had multiple meetings and signed treaties to come to agreements and ease tensions

McCarthyism impact on society:

• Joseph McCarthy accused thousands of Americans of being Communists 
• Hollywood writers, directors, and producers were arrested. Under the accusation that there were "communist ideas/propaganda" in their films.

Communist "witch hunt" and impact on those accused:

• Privacy of individuals was violated.
• Many people were charged under being communists.

Space Race impact on government policies:

• The Soviet Union launched Sputnik
• USA feels threatened, decides to pour $ into education.
• Cold War spurred from this.
• Space explorations expanded, and in 1969 USA put man on the moon.

Cold War mindset for the US government and public:

• USA is afraid of communism.
• We had to beat the Soviet Union in technology/space exploration.

Relationship of suburbs, automobiles, and roads:

• The Suburbs were outside the cities.
• Therefore, cars were required to travel to jobs in the city.
• The 1956 Highway Act was put into action, and millions of dollars went into building new and easier roads to travel on.

Baby Boom:

• Men were coming home from war, the depression was over.
• Could afford to have more children
• The new norm became stay at home mothers, working fathers, 2 children and more than one car

• Inner City : low income families
• Suburbs : middle income families
• Moving out of the Suburbs : high income families (more land etc)

GI Bill:

• Supported veterans, provided them with education.
• Gave loans and 1 yr. compensation

Expansion of the middle class (why things were affordable):

• CREDIT CARDS!(more spending)
• Men were working.
• Development of the suburbs, track homes that were cheap.

 Fresh new icy snow all over the American dream house yard. With the perfect family of six and a pet dog. Three kids waiting in excitement to open their Christmas gifts that are under the tree. As the children peek out the window watching the snow, they more than are ready to play in it. The dog is there too feeling the excited atmosphere around him. Can this perfect family get any more perfect?! It's the perfect American Dream! 

Television!

 Television definitely has a great impact on our society today, and it's kind of sad. Most of everything that comes on the television is fake. When thirteen years olds are discussing what happened on Jersey Shore, it scares me a little! That show is all about hooking up with people. When I was thirteen I was still hooked on Pokemon. The television has way more power today then it did back then. When little kids watch t.v. they don't care what they see, if they like it they will want it or try to be like it. Kids nowadays learn way more from t.v. than they do in school. And sometimes it's for the worst. 

What would we do without the "smart wives"??

This advertisement shows how a man's status and reputation is very important, and having nice clean clothes reinforces that. However, the wife is there to show how easy it is to get the clothes clean and ready. By doing that, it proves that she is not only being "smart", but she is showing how easy it is to get his clothes clean. This product was hoping to sell by saying the men have to look good, and the women would be smart when they used it.

Cinderella Man. . . 

• Jimmy has money problems and it's difficult for him and his family to get by. (this wasn't uncommon for many people)
• The reason for this was because the banks were suffering badly!
• Shifts at the dock are hard to get, and to make things worse he injured his right hand in a fight; thankfully, he never gave up and he kept going for the sake of his family.
• Things were getting worse everyday that it lead him to the bank for help to keep his kids under one roof.
• Time for new fights, meetings with Joe to make it happen
• June 14th,1934: J.J. Braddock v.s. Corn Griffin
• With the win of the last fight he had more chances to fight: John Lewis and Art Lasky. Of course nobody expected when he one both.
• June 13th 1935, Jimmy faces heavyweight champ, Max Baer, who has killed two men in the ring before.
• Mae does not want him to fight this fight,however, everyone else was looking forward to the epic fight.
• 15 rounds and many hours Jimmy took everyone's breath away by wining the fight.
• Becomes the new champ & wins the money.
• Because of the kind of person he is, he pays back the relief fund from the bank.
• No more money problems.
• Works a while on the docks.
• Drafted in WWII & survives.
• He and his wife buy a home and live happily.

Dear Principle,
 In the beginning of the year the first thing I learned in my American History class was that I was lied to all my life about my American History. Everything I know about the history of this country isn't really the truth. Now that I am set straight thanks to Mr. Meechin I guess I shouldn't be insulted. HOWEVER, when it comes to learning about the history of important events like WWII I want to know the details and facts. War is pretty serious and to cover up even a little bit up it's insanity! A lot of people lost their lives and for what?!?!?!?!! To be dead and not remember why??? That's messed up. Why should we know about the Holocaust and not the Rape of Nanking?? The Rape of Nanking is as horrible as the Holocaust. The Rape of Nanking is absolutely a foreign topic to many people, and that is truly sad. When the Japanese invaded China it was terrible. You would never think that a small country like Japan would be so abusive to their neighbor China. Sadly, They were more than abusive, it's sick and cruel! There is no point in hiding things from high school students. How are we supposed to grow up and mature when even school is baby-ing us with education. Denying the fact that it ever happened would be pointless and very wrong. Eventually the truth will always come out. If it didn't then we seriously wouldn't know what happened in WWI and WWII. It's important to know about our past... Learning from our mistakes or embracing our victories, it should be known and valued!
